How to compile files in debian Lenny

First, we will talk about a compiler, well, a complier is a software program that transforms a code written in a computer language to a binary code, with the only purpose to create a executable file for an especific operating system, Why a binary code? because the computers can understand this language.

Next we will see how to compile in debian lenny:

– We have to be logged like root users

If we download a .deb file we must do this:

# dpkg -i [file.deb]

But if we download a tar.gz file we must do this:

# tar -zxvf [file.tar.gz] (this decompress it)

Or if we have a tar.bz2 file, we do this:

# tar -jxvf [file.tar.bz2]

x = to decompress
z = gz format
j = bz2 format
f = to use a file
v = to show the process, it isn’t necesary

# cd [directory] (to in to directory)

# less [readme or install file] (we need to do something special for his compilation, normaly if it show erros in this process you just have to install that error shown in the process)

# ./configure (it configure the files)

# make (to build the binaries)

# make install (to install the software in the system)

Well that’s all..

  1. It’s very important to understand the command uses and apply it properly because in a bussiness environment we must not to commit a fail or not be sure of what we can do.
